• – Threat identification: This critical first step involves recognizing various forms of cyber threats that could impact an organization. These can range from malware, phishing, and ransomware to more sophisticated threats like Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) and insider threats. Effective threat identification hinges on maintaining up-to-date knowledge of the threat landscape, continuous monitoring of network and system activities, and understanding the indicators of compromise (IoCs).
• – Vulnerability assessment: Regular assessments are essential to identify and understand the vulnerabilities within an organization’s network, software, and systems. This process includes conducting security audits, penetration testing, and employing vulnerability scanning tools. By identifying weak spots, organizations can prioritize them based on the level of risk they pose.
• – Threat mitigation: Once threats and vulnerabilities are identified, the next step is to implement mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of a cyber incident. This can involve patching vulnerabilities, configuring security settings, employing encryption, and access control measures. Training employees on security best practices and establishing a strong security culture are also crucial components of threat mitigation.
